Charities that provide financial assistance with equipment or adaptations

If you have been injured at work, you may need specialist equipment or home adaptations to aid your recovery and independence. Several UK charities offer grants and financial support to help cover the cost of mobility aids, assistive technology and home modifications.

At a glance

  • Disabled Facilities Grants provided £307 million of home adaptation funding in England in 2022/23 (Source: GOV.UK)
  • Charities provide grants for mobility equipment, assistive technology and home adaptations.
  • Applications usually require medical evidence and proof of financial need.
  • Some charities support specific groups such as disabled workers, children or people with particular health conditions.
  • Support is often given as grants rather than loans, so repayment is not required.

Key charities offering equipment and adaptation support

  • Turn2Us: Provides a database of grants from trusts and charities across the UK. You can search for relevant funding options on the Turn2Us website.
  • Motability Foundation: Offers grants for vehicles, adaptations and mobility equipment to eligible disabled people. More information is available at Motability Foundation.
  • Independence at Home: Provides grants to people of all ages with a disability or long-term illness for home adaptations and equipment. Visit Independence at Home for details.
  • Family Fund: Supports families with disabled or seriously ill children, including grants for specialist equipment. Learn more at Family Fund.
  • SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity: Offers support and grants for veterans and their families, including equipment and housing adaptations. See SSAFA for eligibility criteria.

What support can these charities provide?

Depending on the charity, financial assistance may include:

  • Wheelchairs, scooters and walking aids.
  • Home adaptations such as stairlifts, ramps or accessible bathrooms.
  • Assistive technology like adapted computers or communication aids.
  • Vehicle modifications to support independence and mobility.

Real-world example

A construction worker who sustained a spinal injury applied for a grant from Independence at Home. The funding covered part of the cost of a stairlift, which allowed him to return home sooner after hospital discharge and reduced the risk of further injury from climbing stairs.

How to apply

Applications usually require:

  • Evidence of your medical condition from a doctor or occupational therapist.
  • Proof of financial circumstances, such as bank statements or benefit letters.
  • Details of the equipment or adaptation required, including cost estimates.

It is advisable to apply early as some grants are limited and may take time to process. A solicitor can also advise you if the cost of equipment or adaptations can be included in a personal injury claim.
